Hartford Infant and Preschool is a joyful, nurturing and ambitious school where children thrive. Inspectors highlighted that pupils are happy, confident and eager to learn, showing exemplary behaviour and highly positive attitudes every day. They feel safe, bullying is extremely rare, and pupils treat one another—and adults—with genuine respect and kindness.
Learning is purposeful and engaging. Daily activities help pupils revisit and strengthen what they already know, while rich experiences such as whole‑school trips, visits and creative opportunities deepen their understanding of the curriculum. Pupils take pride in their work, support each other when learning is challenging and rise to the high expectations set for them.
The curriculum is well designed and clearly sequenced, enabling pupils to build knowledge step by step as they move through the school. Teachers explain learning well, check understanding carefully and address misconceptions quickly, helping pupils make strong progress. Reading is a particular strength, with phonics taught systematically from the moment children start school.
Pupils with SEND are well supported and follow the same ambitious curriculum as their peers. Staff know them well and provide timely, effective support tailored to their needs.
Personal development is a standout feature. Pupils enjoy a wide range of opportunities that broaden their social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding—from travelling by train to exhibiting artwork and taking on leadership roles such as school councillors and lunchtime monitors.
The newly opened preschool has a clear vision for further development, and while some aspects are still embedding, Reception provision is already highly effective and prepares children well for Year 1.
Staff feel valued and supported, contributing to a positive culture and strong wellbeing. Trustees and governors know the school well and play an active, informed role in its continued success.
